Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was finally released on 11 August, 2017 and fans are going gaga over it. Ever since its announcement, the audience had been waiting eagerly to witness the romantic comedy that delves into the subject of open defecation.

Moreover, the recent debacle of Shah Rukh Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal was another reason for which all eyes were on Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. And, we must say that the film has fulfilled all those expectations. It has become one of those few films of 2017 that is seeing a good run at the box office by crossing the 50 crores mark on its first weekend. It seems that when Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan failed to rule the market, Akshay is all set to take it over with these five key factors that makes the film a must watch.

Socially relevant message: Toilet: Ek Prem Katha explores the problems of open defecation and talks about the hardships women have to face because of this nationwide issue. The film is a satirical take on a battle against age old tradition of open defecation and is campaigning against the sanitation issue in India, hoping to spread the message of ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyaan’ across the nation. It also highlights the risk of getting raped or lynched due to such ill practices.

Based on a true story: Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, this film is inspired from the real life of Priyanka Bharti. The 19- year- old newly-wed ran away from her in-laws house two days after her marriage, because she could not defecate in the open. She gave rise to a huge revolution in many parts of the country. Priyanka came back to her in-laws house once the toilet was built.

A complete entertainer: Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is an out and out entertainer. After churning superhits one after the other, Khiladi of the box office is back with a mass entertainer that can create an impact in the society with his social satire. The film has hinterland humour that could appeal to the masses. Thus, the film will educate and entertain the masses simultaneously.

Akshay Kumar: Akshay Kumar, the man himself gives us enough reasons to go and watch his film when it’s running in theatres. Be it comedy or serious drama, the actor has always spelt his charm leaving the audience with more expectations. Be it Baby, Rustom, Airlift, Jolly LLB 2 or Special 26, Akshay Kumar has proved his acting abilities again and again. But, with Toilet: Ek Prem Katha ‘Akki’ has taken the entertainment quotient to a whole new level with a script that was refused by many actors in the industry.

New on-screen pair: This is the first time that Akshay Kumar is pairing up with ‘Dum Lagake Haisha’ actress, Bhumi Pednekar. In this film, Bhumi plays the character of a strong headed bride, who walks out of his in-laws house since they do not have a toilet in the house. And, it’s needless to say that she has stolen hearts all over again after her debut film, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. The on-screen chemistry between Keshav and Jaya is quite interesting yet simple.

Jab Harry Met Sejal: 5 things to expect from Shah Rukh’s upcoming rom-com

Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s Jab Harry Met Sejal is all set to hit the theatres across the globe on August 4. Fans have been going gaga about the film ever since the makers launched its poster with utmost glory. But, talking about romantic films, Bollywood as an industry that thrives on romantic flicks and Jab Harry Met Sejal seemed to be nothing new till the trailer was released. Although, the short teasers or the ‘mini trails’ were not that impressive but, the trailer actually gives a breath of freshness giving the king of romance a degree of cool quotient.

However, this Imtiaz Ali’s new film started garnering a lot of criticism because of the title ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ that is similar to the American romantic comedy named ‘Harry Met Sally’. But, now that everything is going well and it’s only one week left to witness the magic of Imtiaz Ali clubbed with the romance of Shah Rukh Khan, here we are to share 5 things with you that you can expect from Jab Harry Met Sejal.

A pure love story

The trailer introduces the two lead characters named Harry and Sejal to us. For the first time in his 25-year-long career, Shah Rukh Khan will be seen playing a Sardar, while Anushka dons a Gujarati kudi avatar. The tagline of the film says, “What you seek is seeking you” and it goes without saying that this line binds the lead characters together.

Cheerful Characters

Shah Rukh Khan has always been known for his quintessential lover boy image that comes as the legendary Raj and/or Rahul, spreading his arms, in most of his films. But, I guess now it’s time to meet the other side of the ‘Badshah of Bollywood’. In Jab Harry Met Sejal, Shah Rukh a.k.a Harry, a tour guide in his own words, is ‘cheap’ and is a womaniser. He doesn’t hold back from flirting with woman or staring at them. We have always seen Shah Rukh as a soft-hearted romantic guy who can do no wrong, but this time it will be interesting to watch him portray the character of a lover who is not perfect, who is flawed.

Coming to Anushka Sharma, the viewers will get to see Anushka as a geeky (yet sexy) newly-engaged Gujarati girl in Jab Harry Met Sejal. Given a fact that Anushka is almost like a ‘Queen of Accents’, she has successfully portrayed the character with a perfect Gujarati accent in this film. Anushka is usually known for her ‘bindaas’ characters but it looks like this film will showcase a different side of her as Sejal.

Enchanting music

When, it comes to Imtiaz’s films, the music is one aspect that always of top quality. And, this film is not an exception. Ever since the release of the song titled ‘Radha’, the film’s songs were music to our ears and soothing for our souls. As per reports, ‘Radha‘, ‘Butterfly‘, ‘Beech beech mein’, ‘Safar‘ have topped music charts within weeks of its release. On Wednesday, one more song titled ‘Hawayein’ was released and as expected people have already started liking it a lot. Apart from the soulful scores, the fun and peppy music breathes life into the film and help us understand the characters of Harry and Sejal on a personal level.

The magic of Imtiaz Ali

When it comes to making a romantic film, Imtiaz Ali is a class apart. His films are always realistic and he never focuses on fantasy-romance. One can always relate to Imtiaz Ali’s films as the director always keeps his story real. The ace-director has time and again proved his mettle with films that will be remembered for years to come, including Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met. Although his last film Tamasha starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone failed to meet up the expectations. After films like Rockstar, Tamasha or Highway, Jab Harry Met Sejal is expected to bring the director back to the light-hearted genre with this upcoming family entertainer.

The trailer has already displayed a sea of emotions and some powerful dialogues that evokes humour with dark undertone. Both Harry and Sejal have a layer of shades in their characters that would surely create curiousness among the audience to know more about the two.

The sizzling chemistry between Shah Rukh and Anushka

Shah Rukh and Anushka’s on-screen chemistry has always been appreciated be it Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi or Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The duo have been seen weaving amazing magic in their movies and this time the on-screen pair is back with Jab Harry Met Sejal. After the trailer, one can easily vouch for the sizzling chemistry between Anushka and Shah Rukh and hopefully it will not fail to meet up the expectations of the audience.

And, if these things are not enticing enough for guys then the lush locales of the film would surely excite you. Be it the picturesque location of Prague, Amsterdam and Budapest or the rustic beauty of Punjab, Imtiaz Ali has unfolded the scenic beauty brilliantly through the lens. So, buckle up and get your tickets to witness the amazing tale of Harry and Sejal. See you at the theatre!

Every piece of jewelry tells a story.” -Gem Hunt

When women were asked what their jewelry meant to them, the answers had been unanimously familiar. Some said it’s something that holds our emotions, some said it’s the moments that we cherished while receiving it and some feel nostalgic owing to the memories attached to every piece. 2017 started with a bang for the Indian film industry, especially Bollywood and all the credit goes to the big star releases. There were some good performances including Raees, Kaabil, Jolly LLB 2, Mom and Jagga Jasoos. Although, there were big releases by Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, but none of them managed to make it to the Baahubali club. 5 reasons to watch Ranbir and Katrina starrer ‘Jagga Jasoos’

Written by: Avishek Ghosh

“Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

That’s what an adventurous film does. And now, it’s perfect time to quote this as much awaited “JAGGA JASOOS” has released.

“JAGGA JASOOS” has been in the news for past five years, courtesy several rumours and breakup stories. When Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif gave a nod to a musical drama back in 2014, little did they know that it would take almost three years for the project to hit the screens. The film was originally scheduled to release on November 27, 2016, but due to conflicting commitments by the lead actors, it got delayed. Finally, it is now in theatres for viewers to see and judge whether it is worth the wait.

While the title of the film seems purely common, the film is not. The film could be termed as first musical spy thriller of the Bollywood. The core of the film is purely Indian; however the approach and filmmaking style is not. Jagga Jasoos offers varied new offerings. You may like it or hate it, but you cannot stop yourself from appreciating the superb work of the entire unit behind the film. Here are the five significant reasons for which you should not miss the film.

  1. Soul wrenching music- The sole of the film stands on its music. In this regard, Pritam and Amitabh Bhattacharya are the real heroes of the movie. The full narrative of the film is standing on its strong music backed by outstanding lyrics. Jagga sings and narrates the story of his heart due to his speaking disorder is pure gold. He, as a stammerer is so convincing that it almost gets difficult for us to believe that he is merely acting. Given that Ranbir sings to overcome his stammering, explains why there are around 20 songs in the movie.
  2. Ranbir is fascinating: In one word Ranbir is outstanding. From perfecting the presentation of challenged guy to expressing emotion through eyes, his depiction of the central character is noteworthy. He never lets off the cloak of the character even once in the film. His eyes and physical transformation is almost perfect and suited for a detective approach. This would surely go down as one of the best movies of him.

    18581674_636234473238233_420118939256807309_n
    Source: Facebook/JaggaJasoos
  3. Curious plot with intriguing sets: The style in which the story is told is almost like reading a lullaby to a child, a first of its kind in Bollywood. Backed by some strong set display and use of correct pigment of colour, the total presentation Jagga Jassos will serve as an exemplar for other filmmakers.  This transition in the story leaves us curious throughout the movie.
  4. The Innocence of Chemistry of Ranbir – Katrina/ Saswata -Ranbir: Three central characters and their bond and conflict in between has been presented to near perfection. Innocence between the characters never loses its touch, these bond presentations are perfected well by director Anurag Basu. The pain and the fun serve in equal proportion in these characters. The writers deserve a lot of credit for the execution of characters.

    5. Adventure – Fantasy Theme: Let’s be clear on one thing, there are limited films made nowadays that serves to all generation equally, and this film does that. You can watch the film with your friends, partner, family, all alike. Jagga Jasoos unfolds a world of fantasy and adventure. Amid dark themes and overhyped characters in films today, this film serves as a breath of fresh air. Be it the locales or the amazing animation, Jagga Jasoos takes you on a fantasy trip.

Although, I have noted five important points to look out for, but one thing is common in those five points that is a strong effort by Anurag Basu. A film is as good as its director and he has done a sincere job in this regard. I would like to refer here a point, without being biased, but no one understands a detective film better than a Bengali, courtesy Satyajit Ray and Anurag is no different.  To sum up, Jagga Jasoos is an Indian musical adventure romantic comedy film. Go watch it!

Women’s Day Special: In conversation with Ekta Bhattacharjee

She is only 24 and at this age she has received it all that any youngster would dream about. Be it success, fame, love, appreciation: she has achieved all these. Thus, on this special occasion of International Women’s Day, we celebrate the inspiring journey of Ekta Bhattacharjee, a professional designer who has given a new dimension to artwork.

Q1. You are an artist, designer, art director and now an entrepreneur. Please tell us about your journey.

Ekta: The journey has been an extremely beautiful one, with mostly ups and a very few downs. It has been a dream run for me… getting to work in almost 110-115 projects, with so many legendary artists from the country as well as abroad, that too within the age of 24 is obviously a matter of pride for me and more than that it gives me a sense of happiness and satisfaction. As an art director, I am assisting a lot of people, studying loads of books about this department. I guess I need to learn a lot more .

And as far as the entrepreneurship is concerned, I have just started. I have always wanted to have my own designing house, where I would get the opportunity to work with other talented designers from the city. I generally don’t work for free, so I try to make sure that people who are working for my agency get their respective remuneration/salary on time. Because ART IS NOT FOR FREE.

phera poster facebook

Q2. You have designed a poster for “Kaalmrigaya” and “Phera” starring Soumitra Chattopadhyay. Share your experience with us.

Ekta: Oh yes, I got the opportunity to work with him in Kaalmrigaya and Phera. But that happened only because of his daughter Poulami Chattopadhyay (actor and director herself), who gave me the opportunity to work with him. It is absolutely an enriching experience to work with this legend. He is an institute himself, there is so much to learn from him everyday. He is the most energetic and enthusiastic person I have come across and beside that he is extremely kind and caring towards the people he is working with.

Q3. Walk us through your recent artwork for a plays like “Abishkar” by Dulal Lahiri and “Ghasiram Kotwal” by Sujan Mukherjee.

Ekta: Working on these two big projects at the same time was very challenging for me. I was aware that both the projects would need a lot of commitment, time, energy and much more and I am pretty happy with the end results of both. People have appreciated both the art works and at the end of the day that’s what mostly matters to me. I feel extremely happy to have worked in plays like Ghasiram Kotwal and Abishkar

abishkar poster 20 by 30

Q4. How was your feeling working with Mr. Mahesh Bhatt for the Hindi play titled, Hamari Adhuri Kahani?

Ekta: Working in a Mahesh Bhatt project is definitely one of the highest points of my career. And he himself is a very generous man. He takes keen interest in all the department of his play and films. One of his team members noticed my “Felicity” poster and referred my name to him and I was on board the very next day. When the play was premiered in Kolkata, I was very emotional to see my art work placed all over the city.

Q7. Nowadays Photoshop and other digital softwares/means are used for creating some great posters and logos, be it for a film, play, book or a company. What made you take up this art of hand-made posters?

Ekta: I was pretty much convinced with the fact that if I will revive this old  medium again. People will at least take a keen interest to look at it once, but the way people around me have accepted this medium all over again is just overwhelming. I don’t have anything against the digital medium. Rather I myself use the digital medium for the post processing purpose. And I always love Satyajit Ray’s artwork, which has been the biggest influence in my life.

Q8. What do you love most about your work?

Ekta: I love everything about my work, I mean the entire process and the reactions that follow. Script reading sessions, discussions, sleepless nights for executing the ideas, attending rehearsals, curtain calls, all the love, appreciations, criticisms. I enjoy each and everything thoroughly.

Q9.   Are you comfortable being told what to design?

Ekta: I generally read the synopsis first and I am always keen to listen to the director’s or producer’s idea or what they are exactly looking for. I try to match that with my ideas and finally execute it. But I won’t deny the fact that I don’t like to be ordered thoroughly or just do what the director commands me. If the director is a designer or painter himself, then it’s fine but otherwise designers should be given full liberty to execute their thoughts. I believe in words like teamwork or discussions, rather than command or order.

Q10. Share a priceless moment in your life which is related to designing?

Ekta: Mr. Anupam Kher called me up to see all my art works and he was immensely happy after going through each and every work of mine. He praised a lot about me on Twitter and told that he would also love to work with me soon. That’s of course a priceless moment for me.

Q11. Moving on to your personal life, in this age of crumbling relationships, how do you people manage to held on to each other or stay strong since last 8 years and maintain a balance between both your personal and professional life?

Ekta: Patience, perseverance, forgiveness, dependency are few things which made this relationship so strong. Even we have our share of indifferences and I believe no true relationships are perfectly crafted. I know Arnesh since class I and we started dating since class XI. I think what works mostly for our relationship is that we are more like best friends than lovebirds. He was the one who motivated me to follow my dreams. I consider him to be my biggest support and critic, of course.

Q12. Tell us about your future plans and your upcoming artworks or projects.

Ekta: Expanding my designing house is surely on the priority list. And currently I am working for 3 upcoming plays, 3 short films and in the pipeline there are 4 bengali feature films, 3 events, and designs for North American Bengali Conference.

See, young guns have to believe in themselves and take the final call .Freelancing is obviously a good option to earn your bread and butter, but at the end of the day quality, creativity, uniqueness matters. If you have these qualities you are bound to do well in life. Graphic designing is such an innovative field, you just need to have a rock solid guts to turn your passion into profession.
